Prof Michael Sung is currently Director for the Center of Industry Engagement & Internship, and Associate Director of the Entrepreneurship Center at HKUST. He is a high-tech innovator and entrepreneur who has founded a number of successful ventures in the advanced materials and semiconductor industries and is focused on developing the innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem in Hong Kong and Mainland China. Prof Sung was an early innovator of wearable/IoT technologies as the lead investigator for the MIT Media Lab’s Wearable Computing Group. He was also heavily involved in the development of the innovation ecosystem at MIT and was one of the primaries responsible for systematically connecting students and faculty between the business and engineering schools.
Prof Sung is a board member of the International IP Commercialization Council (HK Chapter) and for the past 15 years has focused on tech transfer business development for an extensive IP portfolio in carbon/diamond material technologies, with a specific expertise in connecting internationally-sourced technologies and startups into Greater China. He has received various awards for technology entrepreneurship including Google’s Solve for X Prize (first project ever selected from China/HK), Jiangsu Province’s Innovation and Entrepreneurship Talented People Program, and MIT Enterprise Forum’s Most Visionary Technology Award. He received his PhD in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences from MIT with an advanced financial technology degree from MIT Sloan Business School.
